Craft Certifications

The framework

Certification is law here, not marketing

Moroccan handicraft certification runs through the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy. Marks are granted with the regional Chambers of Handicrafts and the National Committee for Distinctive Signs of Handicrafts, and they are enforced — the Ministry has taken counterfeiters to court.

For a buyer abroad this matters more than any supplier’s own claim: a label is a third party, with published rules of use, saying the piece is what it says it is.

  • 01Law 133-12The national legal framework for certifying and protecting authentic traditional Moroccan handicrafts.
  • 0269 collective marksLabels registered by the Ministry as collective certification marks, each with its own rules of use.
  • 03National CommitteeThe National Committee for Distinctive Signs of Handicrafts, with the regional Chambers of Handicrafts, grants the marks.
  • 04EnforcementThe Ministry has brought court actions to protect Zellige de Fès and Taza-Taounate basketry against counterfeiting.
  • 05External auditCertification is carried out by independent certifying bodies appointed by public tender, not by the Ministry alone.

Collective marks

Eleven labels our workshops carry

Workshops: apply
C1

Zellige de Fès

Hand-cut glazed tile

Clay from the Fès region, shaped and glazed by hand, fired in traditional kilns, and cut tile-by-tile with a chisel. No moulds, no automated glazing, no machine cutting.

Registered with WIPO in Morocco’s name and defended in court against imitation. Granted by the Ministry with the Chamber of Handicrafts of Fès-Meknès and the National Committee for Distinctive Signs of Handicrafts.

Fès-MeknèsArchitecture

C2

Poterie de Fès

Blue-and-white pottery

Thrown and painted by hand in Fès, in the cobalt-on-white register the city is known for.

Distinct from Safi both in clay body and in decoration.

FèsFurniture

C3

Poterie de Safi

Glazed ceramic

Made on the Colline des Potiers from local Safi clay, polychrome glazed and fired locally.

Safi is Morocco’s largest ceramic centre; the label separates workshop output from imported blanks.

SafiFurniture

C4

Thuya d’Essaouira

Burl marquetry

Worked from Tetraclinis articulata burl root by Essaouira marquetry workshops, with inlay in cedar, lemon, walnut, ebony, mother-of-pearl or silver.

Morocco holds roughly 80% of world thuya reserves; the species is protected, so documented sourcing matters.

C5

Cuir Naturel de Fès

Vegetable-tanned leather

Hides tanned in the Fès pits with lime and natural agents — chrome-free — then dyed with mineral and plant colour.

Three historic tanneries survive of the 86 recorded in 1325: Chouara, Sidi Moussa and Aïn Azliten. The French word maroquin comes from the country’s name.

C6

Tapis Beni Ouarain

Hand-knotted wool rug

Knotted by hand from undyed Middle Atlas fleece by the Beni Ouarain confederation, in the cream ground and dark lozenge geometry that defines the type.

Among the most copied Moroccan products worldwide, which is precisely why the collective mark exists.

Middle AtlasFurniture

C7

Handira Moyen Atlas

Wedding blanket

Woven on traditional looms in wool and cotton, with the sequin and pom-pom work of the marriage cape.

Traditionally woven by the bride’s female relatives; commercial production keeps the technique alive.

Middle AtlasFurniture

C8

Tazerzite

Amazigh silver

Silver fibulae, pendants and chased jewellery made in the Souss workshops in the Amazigh vocabulary, in 925 silver.

Tiznit and Taroudant are the reference centres for chased and enamelled Amazigh silver.

C10

Dar Sfifa

Passementerie & trim

Hand-braided sfifa and aakad trim and buttons, in silk and rayon, made in the Fès passementerie workshops.

The detail that makes a kaftan read as genuinely Moroccan rather than Moroccan-styled.

FèsFashion

MH

Maroc Fait Main

Handmade guarantee

Declares the piece as genuinely handmade in Morocco rather than industrially produced or imported and finished locally.

Sits alongside the national Morocco Handmade label as the plain-language handmade guarantee.

Qualité PrémiumThe top quality tier for a craft.
Qualité CertifiéeMade to international (EU / US) standards, checked by an external certifying body.
Artisan ResponsableResponsible production: conditions, materials, conduct.
Produit RégionalOrigin-bound marks tied to a named region or town.

Marks fall into four families. Where a workshop holds the official artwork we display it; until then the geometric seal above stands in for it. The official artwork belongs to the Ministry and to the labelled workshop — ask for the file and the certificate number, and we will put both on the quotation. Our seals are our own rendering, used to identify each mark on this site. The official artwork belongs to the Ministry and is carried by the labelled workshops themselves — ask for it, and ask for the certificate number.

UNESCO

Recognised traditions behind the catalogue

2025CaftanArt, traditions and know-how of the Moroccan caftan — the Fès, Rabat and Tétouan schools.
2022Doum & palm weavingBasketry know-how, practices and products across the Rif and the Atlas.
2021Maghribi calligraphyMaghribi, Kufic and Thuluth scripts — writing as architecture.
2014ArganPractices and know-how of the argan tree, Souss and the Atlas.

Morocco holds sixteen inscriptions on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage lists. These four touch crafts in this catalogue directly. An inscription is not a product certification — it protects the practice, not the piece — but it tells you the tradition behind what you are buying is recognised internationally.

How this connects to MMA Certified

Two layers, doing different jobs

A1

We check the label at audit

Verifying which collective mark a workshop holds, and that the certificate is current, is part of the A1 ownership check. A workshop claiming a label it does not hold does not pass.

A3

Traceability follows the mark

Most labels carry origin rules — Fès clay, Middle Atlas fleece, protected thuya. Those rules are what our material traceability point actually tests against.

MMA

Our seal sits on top

MMA Certified does not replace a national label and never claims to. It adds what a label cannot: capacity, fair pay and export-grade packing, re-checked every year.

Five-point auditRead →

We publish what we hold, what we are in the middle of obtaining, and what we run ourselves — labelled separately, so you can tell the difference at a glance. Every registration number on this page is verifiable against a Moroccan public register before you commit to an order.

Our own programme

Commitments we make and run ourselves. We keep these separate from certified items on purpose — nothing below is third-party certified.

  • MMA Workshop Programme

    Our own programme

Issued by My Moroccan Artisans — in-house

Our own annual review of every partner workshop across five points: craft quality, capacity, working conditions, materials and export readiness. This is our programme, run by our team. It is not a third-party certification, and we do not present it as one.

Run by us, not certified by a third party.

  • Sample-before-production guarantee

    Our own programme

Issued by My Moroccan Artisans — in-house

You approve a physical sample before a production run starts. Workshop defects are remade at our cost. A commercial commitment from us, backed by our terms of sale.

Run by us, not certified by a third party.

  • Production & crating photo report

    Our own programme

Issued by My Moroccan Artisans — in-house

Dated photo documentation during production and at crating, released before the balance payment falls due.

Run by us, not certified by a third party.

  • Third-party pre-shipment inspection welcome

    Our own programme

Issued by Buyer's choice of SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek or TÜV

You may appoint any inspection body to check the order at our premises before it ships, at your cost. We give access and documentation. An open invitation, not a certificate.

Run by us, not certified by a third party.
