Craft certifications

The labels behind the craft

Morocco protects its crafts with a real legal framework — 69 collective certification marks, a three-level national label, and court enforcement. Here is what each one guarantees, and how we verify it.

The framework

Certification is law here, not marketing

Moroccan handicraft certification runs through the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy. Marks are granted with the regional Chambers of Handicrafts and the National Committee for Distinctive Signs of Handicrafts, and they are enforced — the Ministry has taken counterfeiters to court.

For a buyer abroad this matters more than any supplier’s own claim: a label is a third party, with published rules of use, saying the piece is what it says it is.

  • 01Law 133-12The national legal framework for certifying and protecting authentic traditional Moroccan handicrafts.
  • 0269 collective marksLabels registered by the Ministry as collective certification marks, each with its own rules of use.
  • 03National CommitteeThe National Committee for Distinctive Signs of Handicrafts, with the regional Chambers of Handicrafts, grants the marks.
  • 04EnforcementThe Ministry has brought court actions to protect Zellige de Fès and Taza-Taounate basketry against counterfeiting.
  • 05External auditCertification is carried out by independent certifying bodies appointed by public tender, not by the Ministry alone.

Qualité PrémiumThe top quality tier for a craft.
Qualité CertifiéeMade to international (EU / US) standards, checked by an external certifying body.
Artisan ResponsableResponsible production: conditions, materials, conduct.
Produit RégionalOrigin-bound marks tied to a named region or town.

Marks fall into four families. Where a workshop holds the official artwork we display it; until then the geometric seal above stands in for it. The official artwork belongs to the Ministry and to the labelled workshop — ask for the file and the certificate number, and we will put both on the quotation. Our seals are our own rendering, used to identify each mark on this site. The official artwork belongs to the Ministry and is carried by the labelled workshops themselves — ask for it, and ask for the certificate number.

UNESCO

Recognised traditions behind the catalogue

2025CaftanArt, traditions and know-how of the Moroccan caftan — the Fès, Rabat and Tétouan schools.
2022Doum & palm weavingBasketry know-how, practices and products across the Rif and the Atlas.
2021Maghribi calligraphyMaghribi, Kufic and Thuluth scripts — writing as architecture.
2014ArganPractices and know-how of the argan tree, Souss and the Atlas.

Morocco holds sixteen inscriptions on the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage lists. These four touch crafts in this catalogue directly. An inscription is not a product certification — it protects the practice, not the piece — but it tells you the tradition behind what you are buying is recognised internationally.

How this connects to MMA Certified

Two layers, doing different jobs

A1

We check the label at audit

Verifying which collective mark a workshop holds, and that the certificate is current, is part of the A1 ownership check. A workshop claiming a label it does not hold does not pass.

A3

Traceability follows the mark

Most labels carry origin rules — Fès clay, Middle Atlas fleece, protected thuya. Those rules are what our material traceability point actually tests against.

MMA

Our seal sits on top

MMA Certified does not replace a national label and never claims to. It adds what a label cannot: capacity, fair pay and export-grade packing, re-checked every year.
